Waterborne Diseases in Dogs: What Owners Should Know About Unsafe Water
Leptospirosis, Giardia and blue-green algae explained: how to judge whether water is safe for your dog, and which signs mean go to the vet right now.
Dogs, as Morris Animal Foundation's white paper on waterborne diseases puts it with admirable bluntness, are terrible at protecting themselves from unsafe water. Yours will drink from a puddle of unknown provenance, wade into a pond wearing a look of pure joy, and lick the whole lot off afterwards. That is not a training failure. It is just what dogs are. Which means the judgement about whether a body of water is safe has to come from you, and that is easier when you know what you are actually looking for.
The white paper's framing is deliberately calm, and worth repeating up front: most waterborne diseases in dogs are treatable, and several of the frightening ones are rare. The point is not to keep your dog out of water. It is to know which water, and to know what a problem looks like early.
What can actually be in the water
The paper covers five main threats to dogs in freshwater environments. They are not equally likely and they are not equally serious, so it helps to hold them in roughly the right proportion.
- Leptospirosis. A bacterial infection with worldwide distribution that can infect any mammal. Dogs pick it up through contact with infected urine or contaminated water. The paper notes that not all infected dogs become ill, and the most commonly reported signs are fever, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea, with kidney and liver damage reported in some dogs. It needs antibiotic treatment, plus supportive care and hospitalisation in severe cases.
- Giardiasis. Caused by a single-celled parasite called Giardia. Diarrhoea is the usual sign, but the paper is clear that many perfectly healthy dogs carry the organism in their stool without being ill. Treatment uses prescription deworming or antibiotic medicines, and the long-term outlook is described as very good.
- Cryptosporidiosis. Another single-celled parasite, found in every region of the United States and, per the paper, the leading cause of waterborne disease outbreaks in people. Many dogs are exposed without getting sick. When they do, profound diarrhoea is the usual sign, sometimes with vomiting and weight loss. There are few effective treatments, but most dogs recover with supportive care alone.
- Protothecosis. Caused by an alga found in warm, humid regions such as the Gulf Coast states. Many dogs encounter it; illness is rare and often linked to a weakened immune system. When it does cause disease it is serious, and the paper reports that most dogs with clinical infections do not survive it.
- Blue-green algae toxicity. Caused by cyanobacteria, which are common and widely distributed, and which can bloom in both fresh and salt water. This is the one that kills quickly.
One detail from the cryptosporidiosis section surprises most owners: the organism tolerates chlorine, which means pool water can be contaminated too. Clean-looking is not the same as safe, in a pool or anywhere else.
How to read a body of water
Here is the awkward part. The paper notes that it is not always obvious when water harbours dangerous organisms. Blue-green algae is the useful exception, because a bloom is often visible, though it also concedes that a quick dog can get a drink in before you have registered the danger. So the practical guidance is a set of habits rather than a single test.
- Read the posted signs. If an area is flagged as unsafe for swimming or fishing, treat it as unsafe for your dog. Err on the side of caution.
- Trust your nose and eyes. Water that smells of rotting eggs, or has dead fish floating in it, is likely contaminated with a pathogen or a pollutant.
- Note beaver dams. The paper flags them as a good indication that water may be contaminated with Giardia.
- Do not trust clear mountain streams. Crystal-clear water is not necessarily safe. When hiking, hunting or fishing, bring your dog's own water or carry a purification system.
- Avoid water carrying wastewater from treatment plants, and any water with obvious pond scum.
There is also a timing factor most people miss. The paper notes that the incidence of waterborne diseases often increases after hurricanes or floods, when contaminated water gets pushed into places it does not usually reach. The week after serious flooding is a sensible week to keep your dog out of standing water and puddles, however inviting they look to a spaniel.
Why the risk map is not fixed
Many of these diseases used to be neatly confined to particular parts of the country. The white paper argues that this is changing: with a shifting climate and an increasingly mobile society, infectious agents are moving into new territories seasonally, and becoming year-round problems in areas where they used to be seasonal. Your own veterinarian is the best source on what is currently circulating where you live, because they see it before any map is updated.
If you are travelling with your dog, the paper offers one piece of advice that costs nothing and occasionally saves a life: look up which veterinary practices at your destination have emergency hours, before you need one. Timely treatment matters most in exactly the situations where you are least able to research calmly.
Vaccination, and its honest limits
Leptospirosis is the waterborne disease with a vaccine, and the paper's phrasing is careful: vaccination helps prevent infection but may not offer complete protection. That is not a reason to skip it. It is a reason not to treat it as a force field. Leptospirosis also matters beyond your dog, because it can pass to people through contact with infected urine, which is worth knowing if your dog is unwell and you are the one cleaning up.
Whether your dog needs it depends on where you live and what they do, and that is a conversation for your vet rather than a decision to make from a blog. The same goes for any change to your dog's preventive care.
The point is not to stop swimming
Morris Animal Foundation has funded infectious disease research since 1956, when it backed its first study on leptospirosis in dogs, and its Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is now tracking infections across a large monitored cohort of dogs nationwide. But the paper's closing note is the one to take home, and it is not a fearful one. Physically demanding, water-adjacent activity is good for dogs and good for the people walking them. Understanding the risks, avoiding the obvious ones, and knowing where the nearest emergency vet is turns out to cover most of it. A decent rule of thumb: if you would not swim in it or drink it, do not let your dog.
